A journey to discover the Orobie Alps

In the past, the Orobie Alps were part of the Prealpi Bergamasche mountain range, which was considered to be a single, extensive mountain system.  Further analysis by geologists enabled the Orobie Alps to be distinguished from the surrounding mountains, leading to their classification as an autonomous complex with remarkable landscapes.

To find them, simply visit the province of Bergamo, where they can be seen in all their beauty. The Orobie Alps are bordered to the north by Valtellina, to the east by Valcamonica and to the west by Valsassina.  To the south, the Brembana and Seriana Valleys act as a natural divider between the Bergamo Pre-Alps and the Orobie Alps.

The Orobie Alps present exceptional opportunities for trekking and hiking enthusiasts. A network of guided trails and paths, immersed in nature, starts from every point on the slope, allowing explorers to embark on their own adventure.  Here, we will identify the most renowned routes and highlight the most essential sections of the Orobic Alps, as well as the most picturesque locations that ought to be on every visitor's itinerary.

Routes and Routes of the Orobie Alps

The beautiful Orobie Alps are home to 4 protected areas, whose flora and fauna are reassured by the presence of the forest ranger:

  • The Bergamasque Orobie Park
  • The Park of the Orobie Valtellinesi
  • The Sant’Antonio Valleys Nature Reserve
  • The Bosco dei Bordighi oriented nature reserve

Each of these areas can be visited by walkers, letting themselves be carried away by the trails and the landscape.

The ‘Gran Via delle Orobie’ trail runs throughout the entire Orobie Valtellinesi Park, starting from Delebio to Aprica.

It is not an extremely difficult route, characterised by continuous uphill and downhill stretches. It has about 130 km, which can be covered by stopping at various refuges. The local fauna is very rich, and you may be lucky enough to observe little-known species.

Carona and San Pellegrino

The village of Carona may be of interest to those who enjoy hiking and skiing. The village is nestled in the centre of the Alps, situated between the snow-capped peaks of the main range at an altitude of approximately 1,130 metres. Once you have reached your destination, you may wish to enjoy a day on the ski slopes or walk along the trekking trails, which start right from the centre.

An ideal solution for those who wish to observe nature in its natural habitat while maintaining proximity to the comforts of urban life. Restaurants and shops in the centre provide an opportunity to rest, recharge and resume your activities.

In Val Brembana, the municipality of San Pellegrino is renowned for its production of sparkling water. Similarly, San Pellegrino is situated in a verdant valley and surrounded by extensive green meadows.

A visit to the water bottling factory will allow you to gain a closer insight into the production process, while an afternoon at the natural spas will provide you with the opportunity to relax and benefit from the therapeutic properties of the local natural resources.

As previously mentioned, the Orobian Alps offer a multitude of panoramic viewpoints and municipalities that are well worth visiting. To enjoy the full experience, simply select a starting point, put on your hiking boots and embark on a journey along the slopes of these magnificent mountains.
