Varese: the garden city that surprises visitors

What to see in Varese

As announced, the main attraction of the city of Varese is the hidden monuments in the historic center.

The whole town deserves to be visited, but the historic center is the one that best captures the artistic nature of the place, enhancing every corner.

Estense Palace

The Palazzo Estense is located within the Varese Park, a substantial green space in the local area. Construction began in 1765, following the acquisition of the land by Frederick II d'Este. 

The architectural style of the palace is a combination of Neoclassical and Lombard Baroque, featuring a strikingly large and intricately decorated façade.
The villa's rear facade overlooks the meticulously landscaped gardens, which are accessible to visitors. Centrally located within the park is a statue of a nymphaeum, symbolising the watchful presence of the surrounding flora. 

Villa Mirabello

Villa Mirabello, the residence of Count Gaetano Stampa, is part of another of Varese's famous gardens, the Estensi Gardens group. 

High and beautiful, it fully respects the style of the 18th century, with spectacular views of the surrounding greenery. 

The Villa is now an archaeological museum completely managed by the Municipality of Varese. For those visiting the city for the first time, this is an absolutely unmissable stop. 

Robbioni Tower

The famous Torre Robbioni is part of Villa Mirabello, although it was not accessible until 2018. Major renovations have seen it as the protagonist, with the desire to restore it to its original beauty.

Well known for its evening lighting, the set of lights used to make it visible even in the dark of night. Visitors can climb to the top, to enjoy a spectacular view over the whole of Varese and the surrounding municipalities.

Arco Mera

Located right in the historic center, Arco Mera connects Corso Matteotti with Piazzetta San Lorenzo. A particularly impressive monument, built at the behest of Luigi Mera.

The material chosen for its construction, the Viggiù stone is well known. It comes from Val Ceresio and is known for its incredible versatility.

On the arch, it is possible to distinguish elegant bas-reliefs and small statues, which complete the majestic appearance of the building.

Basilica of San Vittore

Passing through the Arco Mera you arrive directly at the Piazzetta di San Lorenzo, where the Basilica of San Vittore is located. A baptistery in full Gothic style, characterized by the presence of a high Baroque bell tower.

One of the most interesting elements to observe on the facade of the Basilica is the memorial dedicated to the period of the Risorgimento. Where it is still possible to see the shape of a bullet, an engraving was made that recalls the period in which the city suffered a strong attack.

In 1859, the Austro-Hungarian army used Varese as a "battlefield", also hitting the beautiful basilica. The stuck bullet dates back to that battle.

Villa and Panza Collection

The last must-see attraction if you visit the city of Varese is Villa Panza, which houses the Giuseppe Panza collection.

Works of contemporary and modern art alternate to win the prize of the most beautiful in the villa, surprising guests and all visitors.
