A small town in Piedmont from which it is impossible not to be fascinated, Arona is located in the province of Novara and is a little gem to discover. Here you can discover various treasures of art, history, and culture and enjoy an interesting view of Lake Maggiore. In addition, Arona represents a perfect opportunity to take a weekend trip from Milan or Turin.
Let's go to the discovery of Arona, where you can find a medieval fortress, stroll along the lakefront, see the ancient buildings of the village, and visit the Archaeological and Mineralogical Museum. Things to see and do in Arona don't end there!
One of the first things to do if you are in the province of Novara is to visit this small town. Arona, on beautiful sunny days, offers an enchanting view of Lake Maggiore through a pleasant walk along the lakefront, dedicated to the fallen of Nassirya. From here you cannot miss a view of the Rocca di Angera, purchased by the Borromeo family in the fifteenth century. To reach the fortress, take the ferry that will take you there in five minutes, and you can visit the medieval fortress with the internal garden, the historic rooms, and the doll, and toy museum. The fortress stands on a rocky cliff about a hundred meters north of the city. Now you can visit the remains of the Rocca di Arona, or Rocca di Borromeo, which has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, up to the final devastation ordered by Napoleon. Here was born Carlo Borromeo, the future bishop of Milan.
At the lake, you can enter the city of Arona, passing through the nearby Piazza del Popolo, the ancient market square surrounded by characteristic arcades, where you can admire the Mannerist church of the Madonna di Piazza, or S. Maria del Loreto, desired by Federico Borromeo in 1592, by Pellegrino Tibaldi.
From here you can enter the village's narrow streets and visit the Archaeological and Mineralogical Museum, which illustrates the aspects of mineralogy and geological phenomena in a didactic way. The Archaeological Museum contains a selection of archaeological finds from the city and the Lower Verbano area, including some belonging to the Neolithic era. There are also many churches in the town and all have particularities, such as the gothic church of the Santi Martiri, or of San Graziano, which has Romanesque origins.
