The city of Forlì was known by the name of Forum Livii, or the Forum of Livio, and was founded by the Romans in the second century and represented a fundamental passage in the Via Consolare up to the gates of today's Tuscany.
The history of the city is very ancient and presents the legacy of this imprint in its architecture, from Romanesque to Renaissance art. The city of Forlì was under the control of the Ordelaffi family who enriched the urban layout with truly admirable prestigious and noble palaces. Forlì, in addition to being an architecturally interesting city, is also within walking distance of the Romagna Riviera and the main tourist resorts.
Taking a trip to Forlì, at the foot of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines, means having a very interesting experience and also discovering quality food and wine tourism. So let's see what are the main attractions to see in Forlì.
The museums of San Domenico were built in an ancient deconsecrated church dating back to the 12th century and hosted exceptional works of art, such as the masterpieces of Silvestro Lega, but also the exhibitions of McCurry photographers and other masterpieces of Art Decò. In this, Forlì proves to be an ancient city with ample ability to make itself modern and attract people of all ages with a refined taste.
This is the main square of the city and one of the largest and most beautiful in Italy. Beautiful palaces and the Abbey of San Mercuriale, Palazzo del Podestà, and Palazzo Serughi overlook this splendid square, a daily meeting place for citizens and in the evening for children. The Abbey of San Mercuriale is one of the most important monuments in the city of Forlì, so much so that its bell tower was used as a model for the reconstruction of San Marco in Venice.
This residence was the home of Benito Mussolini, his wife, and his children. Today, however, it is a very interesting museum to visit. It is a farmhouse also called Casa dei Ricordi which also has some works of art that the Duce collected.
For those who adore medieval walls and want to make a particular discovery in beautiful Forlì, then it is worth visiting the Rocca di Ravaldino, a medieval fortified citadel once surrounded by moats and which served as a prison in the nineteenth century. Today the fortress museum can be visited and it is possible to take interesting photographs.
Palazzo Romagnoli-Reggiani owes its name to the Romagnoli family who settled in Forlì when Lorenzo Romagnoli became prefect of the city. For some time the building was used for the Army and the headquarters of the military district of the province. This building also houses a series of collections from the twentieth century, including works by Morandi.
