Verucchio: discovering the village

Verucchio is a unique and worthy destination that should be on every itinerary. It is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, with a very small and concentrated historic centre, which lends itself to visits throughout the year. The village is ideally suited to visits in all seasons: during summer, visitors can explore the surrounding area of Rimini; in spring, they can enjoy the blossoming of nature; in autumn, they can seek out a peaceful retreat; and in winter, they can admire the snow-covered roofs and contours of the houses, which enhance their beauty.

Emilia-Romagna offers a wealth of attractions, with this charming village just a few kilometres from Rimini.

What to see in Verucchio

Verucchio is located 16 kilometres to the west of Rimini, on a hilltop position. The border with the Republic of San Marino is approximately 10 kilometres away. The village of Verucchio benefits from a highly attractive location, surrounded by a verdant plain and centred on a charming town centre. The town of Verucchio has a rich history, being the birthplace of the Malatesta family. It is home to the Rocca Malatestiana, a prominent landmark visible from a distance, which offers visitors a glimpse into the town's past. The elevated position of this structure has led to it being known as the Rocca del Sasso. It was the residence of Mastin Vecchio, the progenitor of the Malatesta family. The interior of the Rocca offers visitors the opportunity to appreciate a distinctive view of the entire village.

Once you have reached the Rocca on foot, you may wish to venture into the old town centre, exploring its streets at your own leisure. From Piazza Malatesta, with the Town Hall and other representative buildings, you can access the arches and alleys, offering truly sensational views. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy a stroll along the Mura del Fossato, a street formed by the walls that surround the town and overlook the valleys below. The religious buildings are also worthy of note, offering a striking combination of beauty and charm. Among these, the Collegiate Church of Saints Martin and Francis and the renowned convent dedicated to Santa Croce in the hamlet of Villa Verucchio stand out as particularly impressive examples. Additionally, the location is home to a cypress tree said to have been planted by St Francis himself.

A visit to the Verucchio Archaeological Museum is highly recommended. It traces the history of the village over the millennia, showcasing how this little hamlet has become a jewel of unparalleled cultural importance.
