Krapina is the capital of the Krapina and Zagorje region. If you are in this region, the city is certainly a place worth visiting, and not just because it gives its name to the entire geographic area. Krapina is a real rural town and is located along the Krapinica River.
The historical center is not very large, but the city is lively and characteristic. A tour of the city, eating typical food, and talking (or being understood) with the locals is an interesting experience in itself.
But there are other reasons why Krapina is a place of interest for so many travelers.
The first of all is the archaeological site in the area: it is the largest Neanderthal archaeological site in Europe.
Discovered during an excavation in 1899, it contains fossils of animals and humans belonging to a tribe that lived between 100,000 and 35,000 BC.
The area is now used as a museum, open every day from 9 to 17 except for Mondays. Since it is an archaeological museum, you can walk outside for much of the visit.
The city and its attractions are a real journey back in time.
The city offers, in addition to historical and cultural beauties, is full of modern and particular places: bars, games rooms, and casinos to offer everyone more recreation opportunities.
Even without delving into the Neanderthal archaeological museum, a visit to Krapina can fill a whole day!
Less popular than Zagreb and other regions, Krapina is one of the cities that can best introduce you to "Croatia".
